Don’t Forget The Catwalk!

Many aspiring young models make a fundamental mistake when starting out in their modeling career as they neglect the importance of learning to how to actually walk as catwalk model should.

They will often spend a lot of money on fitness regimes and dietary products in order to get in shape and they will then spend even more on a professional photographer so that they can build up their portfolio for when they send it to modeling agencies and executives. But when it comes to meeting the agency for that all important interview or audition they find it difficult to walk in four inch killer heels and are a long way from resembling how a model should walk on the catwalk.

It shouldn’t be underestimated just how difficult it is to walk down a catwalk. There is so much pressure, not only are the whole audience looking at you, there will also be photographers and, depending which catwalk, the whole of the fashion industry could be staring at you, so it is crucial you make a good impression. The same can be said no matter if you are walking at your first modeling audition or at the New York fashion show.

So it is really important you learn how to walk like a model whether it is for the catwalk or an audition. To start off with it is a good idea to choose some comfortable shoes to practice in 2 inch heels will be good for this, just to get you going. Remember, you can work up to bigger heels and more difficult shoes later.

Next, you need to adopt the posture that is typical with models on the catwalk. Make sure you push your shoulders back but move your hips and pelvic area forward ever so slightly, in order to give the appearance that you are leaning back. You should be able to do this whilst balancing a book on your head.

Once you have your posture spot on you then need to focus on the actual technique of walking like a model. Here you need to focus on walking, heel first, followed by your toes, whilst all the time making sure your body weight is balanced on the balls of your feet. The next stage is to walking with your toes facing forward; with one foot in front of the other so that when you walk they form a make a perfect line. By doing this you will give your body that ‘swing’ that you see when a model walks. Try to imagine you are walking along a piece of rope as this should help you get to grips with the walking style. Focus on an object in front of you, remember to step eloquently and gracefully and then just go for it. This will no doubt feel strange at first but you need to practice and master the technique.

To help you learn this walking technique it can be a good idea to watch other models and study how they walk. Also, you may want to video yourself walking so you can see where you might be going wrong and what can be improved upon.

Modeling isn’t just about how beautiful you are, you also need to look and act like model and being able to catwalk, properly, is just as important as looking good on any photograph.

How To Become A Model

modeling advice how to become a modelThink you’ve got what it takes to get on the cover of your favorite magazine, or take a leading role in a fashion show? Becoming a model certainly is no easy task, and there is a lot involved in the process that you might not be aware of. If you’re thinking about starting up a modeling career, then you might want to learn about how to become a model.

The modeling industry is a very competitive industry to try and break into because there are so many individuals who have the same wants and desires that you have. That’s why it’s important for you to prepare yourself both physically and mentally for the challenge that lies ahead.

Appearance

Perhaps the most important area that you need to consider when attempting to become a model is whether or not you have the right physical characteristics that modeling agencies are looking for. If you want to become a fashion model, then your entire appearance from your face to your legs and feet must be in top form. Excellent health, beautiful skin, great hair, and attractiveness are all things that agencies are going to look for when selecting the best of the best.

There are other types of modeling that only require certain parts of the body to be in top form and not the entire body. One great example is hand models. Hand models have to have great hands which consist of great skin, perfect shape, well groomed nails, and other positive attributes. The most beautiful face isn’t necessarily a requirement for hand models because their face, in most cases, is not part of the shot.

Model Type

Determining what type of model you would like to be is just as important as your actual physical appearance because there may be particular requirements based on the type of model that you are trying to become. Someone who is looking to become a runway model has many more physical requirements than someone who wants to become a hand or foot model.

Build Your Portfolio

When you feel you are ready for the particular type of modeling career that you would like to pursue, the next step is to put together a portfolio of photos that you can present to a modeling agency. Consider having professional photos taken of yourself in a number of different poses that are relevant to the type of modeling career you are pursuing. This is your opportunity to really make yourself shine so make sure that you select the best of the best pictures for your portfolio.

Contact An Agency

When your portrait portfolio is complete, it’s time to get in touch with modeling agencies to see if there are any opportunities out there for you. Contact reputable agencies in your area or perhaps those that are not in your area. The more you contact, the more chance you have at getting a shot at becoming a professional model. If they are willing to accept your pictures and like what they see, you might get a chance to interview with them about available positions.

The important thing to remember is not to get frustrated because rejection is inevitable. Realizing that you are going to win some and lose some will help keep you on track and determined to push forward towards becoming a model.
